The Accounting for Business Resilience (AfBR) is a collaborative project between the Environment Agency, the Global Sustainability Institute (GSI) and Groundwork Suffolk, to improve the resilience of small to medium size businesses (SMEs) in the East of England. The project took place between July 2013 and March 2014.

Kingston Smith LLP: St Albans, Hertfordshire – Jan 2014

Company Sector: Financial Services  Number of Employees:

As a top 20 UK audit and accountancy firm, Kingston Smith client teams give business owners, charities and private clients all the support they need to achieve their goals. Kingston Smith’s aim is to support clients in all their organisation’s endeavors. In response to the growing needs of businesses, charities and private clients, they have developed a wide range of services, provided by a group of Kingston Smith businesses. All work closely together to provide the full range of professional services.

Groundwork undertook an on - site resilience review with Kingston Smith in January 2014. The review used the structure of the on-line Resilience Healthcheck at businessresiliencehealthcheck.co.uk to discuss in detail and explore ways in which the company could improve its level of resilience under climate change and also to explore ways in which the company could evolve and develop its advisory services to clients. Kingston Smith had already implemented a number of measures to ensure resilience across their operations, finances, markets, staff, premises, logistics and insurances. As a result, the organisation received a 77% result from the Healthcheck of ‘maintain status’ which is an excellent achievement.

Opportunities Identified for Kingston Smith;

  • Carry out the on-line Business Resilience Health Check annually
  • Facilities manager to check that all office equipment is logged (Incl. photo evidence.) for insurance purposes
  • Further explore the opportunity to advise clients on resilience

Kingston Smith recognise the potential opportunity from incorporating resilience advice into their client offering but feel that in order for this to work it needs to be specific and targeted to each client needs – beyond or pulling out certain topic areas from the Healthcheck Tool itself. Groundwork hope to work with Kingston Smith to utilise their expertise with clients and explore this opportunity going forward.
